Client Profile

Sector: Technology

Our customer was at the end of their Oracle DB migration assessment and wanted to understand the impact of moving to the cloud from a licensing perspective, to enable them to produce a compelling cloud Total Cost of Ownership. The customer has a mixture of physical and virtualised Oracle database servers on premises and were looking to migrate to AWS, understanding that Oracle licensing was a major consideration which could affect the plans.

The overall timeframe for the project was short, as the plan was to present the results of the assessment to their stakeholders within 2-3 weeks.

Delivering an OLA

Version 1 were engaged by the customer to deliver an Oracle Optimisation License Assessment (OLA). The initial expectation was that the target infrastructure and sizing were already completed, with Version 1 engaged to review and make license recommendations and cost estimates.

Version 1’s independent Oracle license team reviewed entitlement, current estate and a number of potential AWS scenarios to determine an optimal fit. Uncertainty around Oracle licensing is commonplace, and Version 1 worked with the customer to advise and guide on Oracle license considerations throughout the project.

It is vitally important to have clarity around your license estate in order that an accurate comparison between the current and proposed deployments can be made. The position discovered at the customer showed a potential risk of over €13M vs an optimised AWS-based solution under €300k Oracle license fee: a reduction of over 98%. This was achieved by Version 1 working closely with the customer and Oracle to ensure that the appropriate contractual policy was applied for virtualised environments.

Outcomes

As a result of this engagement, the following benefits were delivered:

  • Cost Avoidance – a potential risk of over €13M vs an optimised AWS-based solution under €300k Oracle license fee: a reduction of over 98%.
  • Speed – The whole process took 2 weeks from the initial introduction call to OLA completion.
  • Optimisation – Version 1 worked to fully understand the existing environment and to deliver a fully optimised output including the compelling case to change.
  • Customer Satisfaction – The customer was very happy with the output and passed the recommendations on to their stakeholders for rapid implementation.
